| What is Organic? Organic food is produced to a set of standards and principles concerning issues such as chemical use, food additives, animal welfare and sustainability. Organic growers aim to produce food as naturally as possible, free from trans-fats, GMOs and additives. Soil health is critical in producing wholesome products without the use of chemicals.
Why choose Organic? Many people now choose organic produce because of the obvious difference in taste. Chocolate tastes more earthy and natural.
Organic farming methods prevent soil erosion and build healthy soil. Farmers mimic natural systems rather than relying on synthetic chemicals and processes.
Organic farming helps to protect water quality. Pesticides and other chemicals widely used in conventional farming contaminate ground water and pollute primary sources of drinking water.
Why does Organic food cost more? Food pricing reflects the cost of growing, harvesting, transportation, storage, processing and packaging. Organic food production is usually more labour and management intensive and usually happens on a smaller scale. But once you take into account the true cost of food production, organic farming is much cheaper. The indirect costs of conventional food production, such as replacement of eroded soils, cleaning polluted waterways, environmental costs and energy use in artificial pesticide production and disposal, all play a part in the cost to consumers. In countries with more demand for organics, the price of organics is coming down.
